8 Refreshing Activities to Beat the Summer Heat in Puerto Vallarta

Infinity pool on Mexican beach

While many people love the low crowds and quieter tourist season during the summer months here in Puerto Vallarta, managing summer heat can require a blend of embracing the natural beauty of the region, engaging in water-centric activities, and seeking out cool, shaded spots. Here are some very effective ways to stay refreshed and enjoy your time in Puerto Vallarta during the scorching summer months:

1. Pool-Beach Days and Ocean Adventures

The beaches of Puerto Vallarta offer a perfect respite from the summer heat. Relax under umbrellas, beach palapas, or swaying palm trees while enjoying the ocean breeze. Take a dip in the warm ocean water, play beach volleyball, or even try paddleboarding or snorkeling. The sea provides a natural, refreshing escape from the rising temperatures. Plenty of hotels and resorts in the area offer day passes for locals, or those who are staying on a budget but looking for beach-front (and optional all-inclusive) experiences.

2. Explore Hidden Coves and Waterfalls

Venture into the lush jungles surrounding Puerto Vallarta to discover hidden coves and magnificent waterfalls. Take a guided tour or hike to these picturesque spots, where you can cool off in fresh pools and cascading falls from the cool and clean rainwater flowing down from the mountains. The landscapes offer such a peaceful retreat from the heat!

3. Chill at Rooftop Bars and Cafés

Enjoy a cooling drink at one of Puerto Vallarta's rooftop bars, shaded cafés, or air-conditioned restaurants. The scenic spots on the rooftop joints often offer stunning views of the ocean and the city while providing a pleasant breeze. Sip on a cold beverage and artesanal drink, savor local cuisine, and unwind in a relaxed setting.

4. Indulge in Tropical Treats

Satisfy your sweet cravings with tropical treats. Try traditional Mexican paletas (fresh fruit popsicles) made from real, fresh fruits like mango, pineapple, guava, or coconut. Additionally, freshly squeezed fruit juices or gelato & ice cream are offered all over town and are excellent choices to beat the heat. If you’re in the right spot, you might come across a few of my friends selling fresh chilled coconut– they’ll cut it open on the spot! Drink the water, and when you give them back the coconut, they’ll cut it open & scoop out the coconut meat for you to enjoy.

5. Take a Boat Tour

Embark on a boat tour along Puerto Vallarta's coastline to experience the cooling effects of the ocean and enjoy the panoramic views. Many tours offer stops for swimming, snorkeling, or even paddleboarding, allowing you to immerse yourself in the refreshing waters. Fun idea: book a private tour that includes dinner or goes into the evening and you'll get sunset views very few other people will see!

6. Visit Air-Conditioned Museums and Galleries

Take a break from the sun by visiting the various air-conditioned museums and galleries in Puerto Vallarta. Explore the local art scene, learn about the city's history and culture, and enjoy the cool interiors while escaping the heat. On Wednesdays from October to the end of June, various art galleries open up their doors to showcase their works.

7. Morning and Evening Explorations

Plan outdoor activities in the early morning or late afternoon when the temperatures are milder. During the summer, You'll find me back indoors by 8:30am while the heat is still manageable outside. Whether it's a sunrise beach walk or an evening stroll along the Malecón (boardwalk), you'll find the climate more pleasant during these times.

8. Stay Hydrated and Dress Appropriately

The humidity is killer -- stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, and if you’re planning to come for a visit and not yet accustomed to the heater, bring some electrolytes (sugar-free is not easily available here). Also, dress in lightweight, breathable clothing, wear a wide-brimmed hat, put on your sunglasses, and apply sunscreen to protect yourself from the intense sun rays we get here. I’m a big fan of these UV-protective sun shirts (men | women) to avoid serious/further sunburns. Keeping yourself hydrated and protected from the sun are the two most important things you can do to enjoy your time in Puerto Vallarta during the summer.

By combining outdoor water activities, exploration of natural wonders, culinary delights, and smart planning, you can beat the summer heat and make the most of your visit and living in beautiful Puerto Vallarta.
