7 top activities to do if you only have a few days in Puerto Vallarta

Updated: Oct 7, 2023

Puerto Vallarta is such a lovely vibrant here in Mexico, with tons of exciting activities for visitors. If you only have a few days to spend in town, here are eight must-do activities to make the most of your time in our charming little town:

1. Explore the Malecón (Boardwalk)

Take a leisurely stroll along the Malecón, Puerto Vallarta's iconic oceanfront boardwalk. Adorned with sculptures, vendors, street performers, and beautiful views of Banderas Bay, it's a fantastic spot to immerse yourself in the city's culture and vibrant atmosphere. Bring your camera for a photo op with the Puerto Vallarta letters with the Banderas Bay as the backdrop.

2. Visit the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe

Discover the architectural gem of PV, the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This stunning church features a mix of various styles and stands as a symbol of the city. Get a picture of this incredible church during the day and at night! In December, the church has heightened significance as it hosts vibrant celebrations honoring the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico's patron saint. The festivities include processions with the church as the end destination of a multi-day pilgrimage. In the park in front of the church, you’ll observe traditional rituals, and lively gatherings, uniting the community in spiritual reverence and cultural heritage. Most weekend evenings, in the park next to the church, you can sample some Mexican street foods and get into the groove with music and dancing.

3. Enjoy Water Sports and Beach Activities

Puerto Vallarta is a haven for water sports enthusiasts. Whether you're into snorkeling, scuba diving, parasailing, jet-skiing, or simply sunbathing on the beautiful beaches, there's something for everyone along our 25 miles of coastline. If you’re into surfing, I suggest heading to Punta de Mita or Sayulita (for beginner lessons).

4. Discover the Vallarta Botanical Gardens

Immerse yourself in the lush beauty of the Vallarta Botanical Gardens, one of the top botanical gardens in the world, located only ~45 minutes from the city center. Explore an extensive variety of plant species, enjoy peaceful walking/hiking trails, and revel in the natural tranquility of the garden. Finish up the afternoon with a refreshing house-made agua fresca (fruit flavored water) at the on-site restaurant. Try the Rustic Avocado Salad!

5. Experience the El Eden Canopy Tour

For adventure seekers, a zip-lining experience at El Eden is a must. Soar through the jungle canopy, experiencing an adrenaline rush while taking in breathtaking views of the surrounding tropical landscape. For those looking for more tame activities, you’ll find a jungle restaurant to relax in and some gentle hiking paths on site.

6. Try the Best Local Cuisine with a Food Tour

Now we’re talking my language! You will fall in love with Puerto Vallarta if you go on a single food tour. Explore the city's vibrant neighborhoods, sample authentic Mexican dishes, and learn about the rich flavors and history of Mexican cuisine. Whether you’re looking for tacos, tequila & drinks, adventurous foods, real – and quality - Mexican food, or more, call me -- I’d be ecstatic to show or share with you some of the best-kept food secrets that PV has to offer for as much or as little time as you have here.

7. Enjoy Seafood at a Beach Restaurant Accessible by Boat or Hiking

The hike to Las Animas in Puerto Vallarta is an exhilarating journey through the lush jungles and stunning coastal landscapes of the region. The trail leads you along the coastline, offering breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and secluded beaches. Arriving at Las Animas, a picturesque beach village, provides a rewarding conclusion to the hike, where you can relax, savor fresh seafood at 10+ restaurants, and take a refreshing dip in the clear water. This is one of my favorite activities to do with clients! I suggest wearing trail or hiking shoes, bringing lots of water & snacks, and starting as early as possible to ensure you don’t get caught in the heat (especially during summer!)

These activities showcase the diverse offerings of Puerto Vallarta, from cultural and historical exploration to thrilling adventures and natural beauty, ensuring a memorable and enriching visit to this Mexican paradise.
